There have been so many changes in gospel over the years. The artists that produce this music have changed altered the sound to attract different age groups from all walks of life. It has helped the message of salvation spread even further.
The world of gospel has evolved, but the message is the same. The generations that produce and receive this music, however, has evolved with the changes of the world. In the early days of gospel music there was a big divide between gospel and secular. There was no gray area. Gospel songs were for the church. There were recording artists, but there were very few in the industry. The irony of this is that most some of the most well known gospel artists departed from their gospel roots to obtain fame in the world of secular music. Artists such as Sam Cook and Aretha Franklin, for example, were well known in the gospel music industry. These artists evolved, however, as they established themselves as entertainers.
The fans of gospel music were not particularly happy with the crossover appeal that the artists possessed, but it became a common thing as the popularity of gospel music grew. The changes in time would erase the line in the sand that was drawn between gospel and secular music. Gospel would also branch outside of the doors of the church and reach an even greater crowd as the concept of street ministries took the forefront. In time there would be an abundance of gospel singers that were reaching a new generation of lost souls.
It took the efforts of artists like Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary, and Yolanda Adams to change the face of gospel music. The saints met the sinners in full bloom as the sounds of gospel music flourished in new and exciting formats. The message was still the same, but it was being delivered by a whole new breed of youthful singers. These singers possessed a new presentation method that carried the message to a new crowd.
This has been a good thing for gospel music. It has advanced in ways that no one would have ever imagined. There is even a channel that is dedicated to presenting this form of music. It has brought a mainstream appeal to an art form that was once limited. It helped spread the word of God to people that may have otherwise ignored it.
